I finally pulled the trigger on purchasing the DJI Mic Wireless Mic System:

I’ve been researching the potential for a new wireless mic system. I feel that I’m almost ready to get back into some vlogging once again. I also know that I’d like to do some video work with Stephanie.

In the past, I’ve used a number of “shotgun” mic options that have worked pretty well. However, there have been a few times when the camera was not getting audio from the mic and I was not aware of it until after the fact.

Also, there have been times when Stephanie and I would record a video together and I’d much prefer that the two of us would each have our own lavaliere microphone.

Why I never purchased the Rode Wireless Go 2 System

For a very long time, I was considering the Rode Wireless Go 2 system. It also has two wireless transmitters, that can be picked up on a single receiver and where each transmitter also has internal recording as a backup.

I DID NOT get the Rode system because it required proprietary software to get the audio files off of the transmitters. While this wasn’t a total “deal breaker,” it was a big enough turnoff that I put off the potential purchase for a very long time. Looking back, I’m thrilled that I did purchase the the Rode system because I would have missed out on all the amazing features of this DJI Mic setup.

The DJI Mic Features That Won Me Over

The Case:

I love that this system comes in a charging case and that the case, much like my airpods, has an internal battery that will charge this entire system. Pretty much the most essential parts of this system in a tiny case keeping it all charged with a single USB-C is awesome.

I also love that these items are all synced automatically when they are placed in the case and that they can be set automatically to turn on when you pull them out of the case.

Field Recording Functionality

Both transmitters have onboard recording capability with 8GB of storage for up to 14 hours of backup recording. This allows you to record audio directly to each transmitter as a backup in case of wireless interference and dropouts. You can also use the transmitters as standalone recorders for recording in the field.

While I’m not super excited about it breaking the recordings into 30 minute audio files, I can deal with that limitation.

No More Batteries!

With my existing wireless setup, I had constantly gone though AA batteries like crazy. I eventually moved to NiMh rechargeable batteries. However, the rechargeable batteries didn’t as as long as alkaline batteries.

With the DJI Mic transmitters, each of them has 5.5 hours of battery life and 5 hours on the receiver. The charging case is supposed to carry enough to charge everything 2.5 times.

It most use cases, I’ll be using this system solo. I can use one transmitter for 5hrs as a field audio recorder, swap it for the other for 5 hours, while the first one is charging in the case.
